The Little Mermaid - mersisters with Flounder

Second Theatre Company’s performance of Disney’s The Little Mermaid awed audiences and brought the community together “under the sea.”

Joy. The word “joy” was most often used to describe The Little Mermaid experience, from the first rehearsal to the final performance. There was joy evident in the audience's reaction to the show, joy in the lobby after each performance and joy in the Lord demonstrated by the cast and crew as they used their talents to glorify Him.

“At each rehearsal, the cast and crew prayed for the Lord to be glorified and for the audiences to see something different about our students, which is the glory and joy of the Lord,” said Director of Arts and Upper School Musical Director Cindy Blades.

In a show like Disney's The Little Mermaid, a wide net was cast, bringing in the entire SBS community. Already appealing to lower school students, Second Theatre Company went a step further, casting two lower school boys to play Flounder. Briggs ‘33 and Kyle ‘34 had the unique opportunity to train, rehearse and perform alongside seasoned upperclassmen theatre students.

Music Director Claire Westmoreland said, “Briggs’ and Kyle’s enthusiasm added so much to this cast. They both fit right in.” She continued, “This is something I love about Second Baptist School is how our upper school students interact with and mentor our younger students. It makes this place truly special.”

Third grader Briggs said, “I had the BEST time with all the high school kids trying something new!” His mother, Natalie Baker, added, “The theatre students truly took him under their wings and were such wonderful role models. Briggs will hold these memories with him forever. It brought our entire family and close friends immense joy watching him perform and shine bright on stage.”

“I loved hanging out backstage with the high school kids and acting on the stage. I liked that this was my first ever musical,” said Kyle ‘34. Kyle’s parents, Kyle and Heather Brensike, agreed, saying that the cast and crew “were so supportive and brought out the best in him and each other.” They shared, “We were able to witness God’s hand guiding these amazing performers over the past few months, and we will cherish these memories forever.”

Every cast, crew and audience member experienced what it was like to be a part of Our SBS through the collaborative nature of this unique show. Junior Zoe Chapman (Jetsam) said, “What gave us such a feeling of togetherness was that the whole cast had to contribute to make the show great. The head flyer instructor told us, ‘It takes a village.’ Community participation is what this musical was all about.”
Finally, Mrs. Blades expressed, “The theatre family is a tight-knit community of parent volunteers, students and teachers. We also interact with professionals from the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and the staff of each theatre where we perform, are all impressed with the SBS community.”

Some parents even take vacation time off for Tech Week; they are seen hammering, painting, sweeping and more. “Nothing is too high or low for them to accomplish,” said Mrs. Blades.

Second Theatre Company, thank you for bringing Second Baptist School together “under the sea.”

God Bless Texas

On Go Texan Day, SBS PK4 and Bridge students presented Hoedown, their traditional rodeo program

Howdy partner! Second Baptist School PK4 and Bridge students took us “Deep in the Heart of Texas” in their Hoedown program. Dressed in their finest cowboy and cowgirl attire, these young students proudly galloped into the gym in front of an enthusiastic audience of parents, grandparents and friends.

These students have been practicing their parts for weeks, rehearsing songs, memorizing Bible verses and learning to square dance. It was a proud moment when the students recited John 3:16 loudly and proudly, complete with accompanying motions. Their songs reflected not only an appreciation for Texas culture but also a love of Jesus.

Bridge students presented facts about the Lone Star State, bravely speaking in front of the gym full of guests. Following this presentation, the students promenaded around the gym to “Walk the Lonesome Trail.” Of course, the main event was the square dancing, led by SBS coaches. Twirling, circling and do-si-do-ing together with focus, these students showed off their hard work!

Bible teacher Ashley Corbin shared, “The songs and dances in Hoedown teach our students to give thanks to God for our wonderful state and country. As Christians, we are aware that God created and rules over our land.” These values were demonstrated throughout the program and have been absorbed with enthusiasm by our PK4 and Bridge students.

Cowboy Prayer

Oh, thank you Lord for the clear blue sky
And the big white clouds that go floatin’ by.

Oh, thank you Lord for the trail ahead
For my chaps and my spurs and my daily bread.

Oh, thank you Lord for the cows that roam
And the open range that i call my home.

Oh, thank you Lord that You’re here with me
Livin’ in my heart where You’ll always be.

New Family Article - The Kandolhas

Join us in welcoming the Kandolha Family to Second Baptist School!

Welcoming the Kandolha Family to Second Baptist School

Second Baptist School is delighted to extend a warm welcome to the Kandolha family, who joined our community for the 2023-2024 school year. Jennifer & David Kandolha, along with their sons, Matthew ‘27 and James '30, arrive with a commitment to elevated education, a passion for fostering character development and a strong desire for their boys to thrive in a nurturing Christian environment. The Kandolha family graciously shares their experiences and highlights.

Choosing SBS: A Home for Character and Academic Excellence

For the Kandolha family, the decision to apply to Second Baptist School was rooted in a quest for a well-rounded educational experience. "We've always envisioned a school where our boys could not only excel academically but also grow in character and faith," shared Mr. and Mrs. Kandolha. Through interactions with SBS families in their community and the exceptional leadership of varsity baseball Coach Rayner Noble, they were drawn to the school's unwavering commitment to academic rigor and character development. Their instinctive belief in SBS as the best educational home for their family has been reinforced at every stage of their journey.

Seamless Transition and Community Integration

Transitioning to a new school can often be challenging, yet the Kandolha family found the process surprisingly easy thanks to the warm embrace of the SBS community. Their sons quickly felt at home, thanks to the welcoming socials hosted by SBS families and the inclusive environment fostered by Coach Brydon and the football team. Both boys have integrated seamlessly into the school, with academic success and a newfound sense of peace defining their time at SBS.

Noteworthy Differences and Exceptional Faculty

The Kandolha family has been impressed by the school's commitment to college preparedness, effective communication and supportive faculty. They have found SBS teachers to be genuinely caring and committed to their students' success. “Just days after being accepted into the SBS family, we saw Andrea Prothro at a baseball game. She walked straight over to us and called us by name, which was a big deal considering our last name confuses everyone," shared Jennifer and David.

Highlights of Christian Education

Witnessing the integration of faith into academic learning was one of the most memorable experiences for the Kandolha family during their first semester at SBS. As part of a sixth grade class project, their son James was encouraged to think about God's presence in his life and to extend His love to those in need. This all-encompassing approach to education was one example that resonated strongly with the family's faith and values.

Memorable Moments from Day 1

Amidst the many memorable moments of their first semester, the Kandolha family fondly recalls the all-school worship Convocation service on the first day of school. “We will never forget seeing all of our SBS teachers form a circle around the student body in prayer. What a perfect way to start a new school year!”

"My SBS is..."

In completing the sentence "My SBS is...", the Kandolha family expresses a profound sense of value and gratitude. They feel deeply cherished and embraced by the Eagle community, affirming their belief that SBS is the place to be.

Parade of Presidents 2024

Second Baptist School second graders presented the annual Parade of Presidents program for parents, grandparents and the SBS community.

Second Baptist School presented the Parade of Presidents. Taking on the roles of our nation’s esteemed presidents and first ladies, these second graders took their parts seriously. From their authentic costumes to practiced accents, the audience enjoyed a trip through time, starting with President George Washington and ending with our current president and first lady, Joe and Jill Biden.

During second grade at SBS, students discover the stories of famous Americans, including the presidents and first ladies, as they study history, patriotism and the heritage of our great nation. The Parade of Presidents lets each student become one of these important figures, sharing interesting facts and quotes. Not only do they learn historical facts, they gain an appreciation for the country’s leaders and learn how to lead by speaking in front of a large audience. The second grade team worked hard on the program this year, and the results were both impressive and endearing.

Always a memorable part of the show, the second graders took time to honor parents and grandparents who have served in the military. These young students sang a heartfelt rendition of "God Bless America," and the entire community felt the patriotic spirit.
